Re: 1500 Watt 48V Speed Controller
Update: I did successfully run a weekend on 8S with one of these. I used a DC-DC boost converter on the "key" (logic power) line, and it worked fine. I got some super sketchy ones from Amazon that required reflowing to get the inductor attached (would not recommend). Anything that gets you...

Re: 1500 Watt 48V Speed Controller
EDIT (again): I think this actually does work. The controller I tried it on has other problems (it appears to fail self-learning hall settings). Haven't actually tried it though, so who knows. EDIT: None of this actually works. You end up with a speed controller which will spin wheels in the ...

Re: Analyzing effectiveness of motors and controllers
Fun fact: when people say "trapezoidal commutation", they commonly mean at least four different things. I just now finally convinced myself people really do talk about using all four (not sure whether they actually use all of them in controllers), and also that there are in fact four and n...

Re: 1600/1800w Brushless DC Motor (my1020 clone)
I think the smoothness of the data here is all measurement noise. The T20 looks better because it's a nicer scope, measured at a higher frequency , and spinning faster so the noise is a smaller percentage. Plus I just realized I screwed up my data analysis and the T20 data is artificially quantized ...

Re: Using a china controller with better hardware
I made it about halfway through the datasheet for the MCU on the China controller. It has a timer (independent of the hardware driving FETs) which supports capturing input pulse widths on three channels, which makes for a nice communications channel if the correct pins are accessible. Specifically ...

Re: 1600/1800w Brushless DC Motor (my1020 clone)
Turnigy Aquastar T20 Dug up data from the T20 too. All my data is with it in Y (slower) configuration. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-aquastar-t20-3t-730kv-1280kv-water-cooled-brushless-motor.html?___store=en_us is the canonical location for finding it. From the outside, with water cooling jac...

Analyzing effectiveness of motors and controllers
I've had lots of discussions with various people about what motor and/or controller is "more efficient", and left most of them realizing I don't really know what that means. There are lots of reasonable-sounding ways to compare these things, so even deciding which one is interesting is har...

Re: 1500 Watt 48V Speed Controller
The ones Aren ordered showed up, and they're completely different from that ES thread you linked with pictures of some controller. On the plus side, this one looks way easier to program (labelled JTAG connections). However, that means all the stuff about current setpoint tweaking via resistors is in...

Re: 1600/1800w Brushless DC Motor (my1020 clone)
I collected data on two of these motors. It should all be fairly precise, but no promises. They're both basically identical on outside dimensions. Second motor is coming in a second post, because apparently I have too many pictures for one post... 1600W BOMA This is what the nameplate looks like: bo...
