Push Button Moxie Sounds

Post by Jason »

This is the setup that was run in Raphael for San Mateo 2018.

It revolves around this little guy. This one was selected due to memory size and price. There are many variations of this, some with built in amplifiers (not needed with powered speakers) and some with a built in headphone out, but I believe lower memory size).

This is detected like a flashdrive. You simple copy .wav or .ogg files to it. The quality can be as high as 44.1KHz 16 bit stereo. You then rename the files to something like T01.wav so "trigger 1" on the board will play that file. More details can be found here https://www.adafruit.com/product/2341 .

Additionally I purchased a aux cable. I cut it in half and wired the female end to the LR and Ground on the board. This gives the board a standard 3.5mm headphone jack out.

Any buttons that can go from signal to ground will work. I happened to use these.

Finally you need some powered speakers. I used these, they work fairly well but can be a little quiet and distorted turned all the way up. I like them though, for the addition of the volume knob. There are better speakers that can be found in the ATV/Motorcycle space.

Additional items that can help make this work a lot easier is a 48v to 12v converter.

Also a car USB power adapter. This will allow you to power the board with a simple USB cable, plugged into this, plugged into the 12v converter, and finally into the battery. I promise it's not as ridiculous as it sounds, and you get a phone charger!
